| Eric, I got my first job! It's volunteer, but it's national. It's the radio commercial for the YMCA Twin Cities that they will be sharing with their affiliates nationwide. You helped me revise my cover letter last week. I thought I wasn't selected because I didn't hear back from them on Monday, but this morning I sent my VFA web page with bio and demos AND NOW I'M IN, MAN!!!!
It's a start. Baby steps every day.
Thank you and all at VFA. Patrick L. - MN |

While trying to work through some equipment set up failures I had to pass up on submitting an audition, because I couldn't make the deadline. That was really disappointing for me, because I felt my voice type was perfect for that particular job. Drats! Feeling as if I would never get my VO business off the ground I received a phone call the very next day. I was asked to record an intro for a mega church in the area called Mount Calvary Baptist Church. Every Saturday, they do a broadcast on KDYA Radio (1190-AM) and recently increased from providing three services each Sunday to five services (in order to accommodate their growing congregation of five thousand). The :30 second spot was to highlight the additional services and introduce the weekly broadcast. Needless to say, I was thrilled to get this opportunity for an ongoing message on local radio. Last year (before my VFA grad training) I recorded a :15 sec. radio spot at that church to promote an event. The church media ministry staff remembered me and called me for this new job. A true blessing and a testament of a satisfied previous client! In January 2010, I was laid off from an engineering director position in higher education after 16 years of service. It was a difficult time, but I was happy for my new-found time freedom (no more business travel) and to explore my passion for doing voice over. After enrolling in the VFA Grad course, I was eager to set up my home studio and get my business started. Then life got in the way and I was sidetracked for a couple months. I felt so behind in my intended progress. Courtney Thayer's continued encouragement was just the boost I needed. I reviewed my notes from class and remembered the analogy that Eric Hunt uses, "When you get a flat tire on the road, what do you do? Do you get out of the car and flatten the other three tires or do you take out a jack and fix the one bad tire?" Point taken. Thanks Eric!
Now that I am back in the drivers seat; I always wanted to get more involved in my community. So I auditioned for a local production of The Wiz by Ivory Arts, Inc. After embarrassing myself with the singing portion of the audition the director, Terrence Ivory, decided to cast me as the live voiceover announcer to begin each show and introduce the cast at the end. The seven performances will start in February 2011. Fortunately, my speaking voice is more impressive than my singing and I am excited to be apart of the cast and crew. During one of the rehearsals a cast member approached me to solicit my voiceover services. She is in charge of the advertising for an upcoming National Bible Conference held in California this year. We discussed the project during the rehearsal breaks and I gathered all the information I needed to prepare a comprehensive invoice for the job. I am happy to report that I also negotiated the privilege to write the scripts for the :15 second radio spot and the :30 second TV spot and I'll record VO for both. I discovered I have pretty good script-writing skills and its advantageous to record messages from words and phrases I strategically arranged. At this point, I am waiting for the scripts to be approved and then I'll eagerly record them. At the completion of this project I will have commanded enough income to cover the cost of my protools equipment already purchased. All this - after only five months in the business. This is one of the best Christmas gifts I received. I look forward to more variety in my growing list of satisfied clients. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves, turn on my mic and breathe voice into any audio messages in the New Year.

| Hi Andrea,
I hope this message finds you doing well. I'm doing fine and very busy. I wanted to let you know that I was selected to be the voice of the company I work for. This is a corporate firm statewide and international. I submitted recording sample of my voice to the script provided by the IT Manager in our San Francisco office. I'm not sure how many tried out but I know it was a few. Anyway I got a call this morning that the Planning Committee selected me to be the voice for all of the 25 offices. I just wanted you to know that I am still moving forward and pressing towards being in this wonderful world of voice over. This will be my 3rd architectural firm I've done voice over for. I'm so excited and I wanted this position really bad. Guess what I read it in one take!
Dear Ms. Thayer, Earlier this year I was asked to do a narration regarding a presentation for the firm I presently work for. I've also have done some voice mail greetings for a couple of businesses out of state. Denise M. - CA |

| My first gig was offered to me just a few days after the demo's were posted and my equipment was set up. I found a posting on craigslist asking for a female voice over for a hair salon. I submitted a link to my demo's, and then went about my day.
I was so estatic when I got an email later that night saying that they wanted to use me for their Hair Salon Video! I was literally jumping up and down in my seat with excitement and amazement!!! My first VO gig, and so soon! We worked out the terms over email, he sent me a script. It was recorded and edited it that same night, sent off as a wave file, and two days later, my salon commercial was on You Tube! And true to their word, I received payment in the mail just a few days later.
I can't wait until my internship is over and I can devote more time to Voice Over. I want to work on my animation/gaming/ character demo, and have been developing some distinct 'voices'. I also want to start submitting myself for more gigs, to agents, and to studio's and companies.
I'm certain that more success stories are sure to follow! Heather G. - CA |
