Audiobook Focused Master Class
(Silver, 23 Sessions - Gold, 27 sessions)
- Industry Overview: You have already read pages 1-10 in the Audio Book workbook. In this opening session your instructor will shine the spotlight on some of the most basic aspects of the Audio Book industry. This information will set the stage for what you will be learning and practicing over the upcoming sessions that are geared towards the wonderful world of Audio Book narration. Homework: Read pages 19-24 in the Audiobook workbook.
- Character Separation and Voice Selection: Creating a different voice to provide character separation is a requirement in narrating fiction. How do we do that? After reading the book the first time, you should have a good feel for each character. You’ll notice that only a handful of characters show up throughout the entire book (the main characters) and most of the other characters only appear briefly or may only have one or two lines (the cab driver, the store clerk, the voice in the crowd, etc.). Therefore, you have to identify every single voice you need to create and use. You can break up all the voices in any book into three main groups; 1) narrator, 2) main characters, and 3) side characters. Homework: Read pages 25-29 in the Audiobook workbook.
- Character & Dialogue Exercises: One of the most popular ways to develop a character voice is by looking at an image of the character you will be voicing. In this session your instructor and you will work on some exercises using the voice to picture method as well as a voice with no picture method. You’ll find this session to be fun as well as a great baseline entry point into your journey of learning Character Voicing techniques. Homework: Read pages 30-33 in the Audiobook workbook.
- Fiction isn’t for everyone: Fiction can be very demanding. It’s not for everybody since not everyone can convincingly portray more than one person, let alone up to 50 or more characters that are all in the same book. That’s why the Harry Potter series narrator, Jim Dale, is so popular. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, he created and recorded the voices for 146 different characters – a feat for which he holds a Guinness World Record. In this session your instructor will go into some other important areas of Audio Book narration such as Volume, Diction, Pacing and creating suspense. Homework: Read pages 34-37 in the Audiobook workbook.
- Continuing with some of the essentials from the previous session: Exercises on Diction, Pacing and Generating suspense. Homework: Read pages 24-28 in this workbook.
- Technique through B.A.S.I.C.: This week will consist of learning our unique B.A.S.I.C. approach to your most critical VO skills. Think of this as the foundation for the eventual house you will build during the later weeks of your course. The script is what you, as a VO professional, use to create that finished product and once you truly understand voice over technique and how to handle and use a script, you will be more than just a reader. Homework: Read pages 30-33 in this workbook.
- Pitch Control & Pronunciation: The ability to precisely control the pitch of your voice is like the ability to use a musical instrument to produce the sound you desire. With good pitch control you will be able to provide clients with dynamic and engaging deliveries that keep the audience interested! Homework: Read pages 34-35 in this workbook.
- Tempo/Pacing/Smoothness: Clear pronunciation, proper tempo and correct pacing are all critical to a good VO performance. Listen to a national TV or radio ad and notice how it sounds crisp, but not hurried. These are critical skills for any good VO actor and you’ll learn and practice these skills until you have them down. A good VO actor sounds smooth, unhurried and steady throughout a read. You will learn what it takes to achieve that via exercises, practice and listening to examples of smooth, and not so smooth reads. Homework: Read pages 36-39 in this workbook.
- Proper Emphasis & Energy Control: Stressing a single word can change, ruin, or make any message. You’ll learn how to apply emphasis precisely and consciously so that the director and the client get the exact read they desire. We’ll also teach you techniques for maintaining your energy and controlling your breathing so that you’ll be able to deliver clean, consistent work whether you’re reading War and Peace or Bugs Bunny’s Best Carrot Recipes. Homework: Read pages 40-42 in MC Part 1 workbook.
- Adding Emotion: Part of many good VO performances is making the listener feel something; eliciting an emotional response. In order to do that, you need to be able to bring emotion into. Homework: Practice.
- Home Studio Review: We will go over any questions you may have about using your home studio and address any issues that may arise. You’ll be able to create dry tracks that can be sent to clients without ever leaving your space or having to travel to an outside studio. Homework: Practice.
